Shikshagraha
Shikshagraha is a people’s education movement dedicated to improving 1 million public schools in India by 2030, ensuring every child has access to quality education and the opportunity to dream and succeed. The movement brings together diverse stakeholders—government, civil society, markets, academia, and industry—to collaboratively address the challenges in the public education system through a micro-improvement approach and decentralized actions. By working alongside local actors, fostering collective action, and employing data-driven strategies, Shikshagraha aims to create an inclusive learning environment where every student, regardless of background, gender, or abilities, can thrive in the 21st century.
The Mission
Shikshagraha exists to ignite a nationwide movement that fundamentally reimagines what public schools can deliver for India’s children. We work to dismantle the deep-seated beliefs that limit educational potential — that government schools are a last resort, that communities are passive recipients, and that learning is only about academic performance.
Our mission is to demonstrate that transformation begins with those who know children best. We partner with districts where foundational learning gaps are greatest, supporting local leaders, teachers, and communities to co-create solutions that prepare children not just for exams, but for life, work, and citizenship.
Our Approach
At the core of this movement is the belief that transformation begins with restoring agency to those closest to the child – schools and communities.
This will be achieved by bringing together four vital forces:
Enabling leadership at all levels
Enabling parents, women and youth to demand and support quality education.
Equipping teachers, school leaders, officials with tools for micro-improvements towards systemic change.
