What does it take to prepare children for the future?
Children today are growing up in a world that is changing faster than ever before. Preparing them for the future requires more than access to education. It requires understanding what knowledge, experiences, and opportunities help them thrive throughout life.
What truly prepares children for the future?
Over the last decade, Mantra4Change has worked alongside education departments, school leaders, teachers, parents, and communities across India. Across these diverse contexts, one question has continued to emerge:
While foundational learning remains essential, children’s futures are also shaped by their ability to make informed decisions, build meaningful relationships, adapt to change, continue learning, and contribute to society.
This page brings together the research, perspectives, and experiences shaping that question.
Here, you’ll find evidence from the education sector, our understanding of future readiness, stories from people reflecting on their school experiences, and opportunities to contribute your own.
Whether you’re an educator, parent, student, policymaker, researcher, organisation, or simply someone interested in the future of education, we invite you to be part of this conversation.
Why does Future Readiness matter?
India has made remarkable progress in expanding access to education. Today, 98.1% of children aged 6–14 are enrolled in school — one of India’s greatest educational achievements. Yet access alone does not guarantee learning.
The National Achievement Survey 2021 also found learning levels declining from Grade 3 onwards across subjects. These findings remind us that bringing children into classrooms is only the beginning.
India’s National Education Policy 2020 rightly identifies Foundational Literacy and Numeracy as the highest priority for the education system. Strong academic foundations remain essential. At the same time, children are growing up in a world that asks them to make informed decisions, adapt to change, build meaningful relationships, work with others, continue learning, and contribute meaningfully to society.
Preparing children for the future means creating opportunities for both.
How does Mantra4Change understand Future Readiness?
Future readiness is not another subject. It is not a checklist of skills. We understand it as a child’s ability to develop the knowledge, capabilities, relationships, and experiences needed to navigate an uncertain and changing world with confidence, purpose, and responsibility. At Mantra4Change, we understand Future Readiness through five interconnected domains.

Two ways to test your future readiness
One sorts the pieces. One puts you in the situation. Start wherever you like — both take about three minutes.
Getting children ready for school future
What did school prepare you for? What did it overlook?
Research helps us understand Future Readiness. People’s lived experiences help us define it.
Every adult carries lessons from school. Some helped them thrive. Some revealed what was missing.
Through this campaign, we invite educators, students, parents, professionals, researchers, creators, organisations, and citizens to reflect on their experiences of schooling and connect them to the capabilities, relationships, and opportunities that continue to shape their lives today.
Selected submissions may be adapted into stories, social media posts, articles, videos, and other campaign content by Mantra4Change.
